    Abstract: The East Los Angeles Archives (ELAA) is comprised of collections which document the lives and events of a historical community central to the social, political, and cultural history of the Chicano/Latino community in the United States. The ELAA is a program that advances scholarship in Chicano/Latino studies and Los Angeles history through its varied collection of primary research materials. This archives has a special interest in materials documenting the Chicano and Civil Rights movements in East Los Angeles during the 1960s and 1970s.

    Arrangement

    The collection is organized into eight series: I. Writings/Publications; II. Newspapers; III. California State University Los Angeles related documents; IV. Subject/Topical files, V. Announcements/Events; VI. Photographs; VII. Posters; VIII. Ephemera. Three of the eight series consist of subseries. Series I. Writings/Publications is organized into seven subseries: a. Magazines/Journals; b. Reports/Studies; c. Articles; d. Newsletters; e. Presentations; f. Student Papers; g. Other Publications. Series II. Newspapers is organized into two subseries: a. Newspapers and b. Newspaper Clippings. Series V. Announcements/Events is organized into two subseries: a. Programs/Flyers and b. News releases/Press releases.

    Biographical / Historical

    David Sandoval is the former Director of the Cal State L.A. Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) from 1981-2008. An EOP graduate, Sandoval entered the program in 1969 as a special admit student. During the 1960's, he was a student and community activist (UMAS, MECHA, Brown Berets); combining his media talents with his concern for the community by writing and producing short video and film documentaries.
    His credits include "Guadalupe" and "Una Nación Bilingüe" for the national PBS "Realidades" series. He also served as National Coordinating Producer for "Infinity Factory," a PBS series on math, targeted to Black and Latino children. In the late 70's, he co-hosted and produced a weekly cultural and public affairs radio show entitled "La Vida Latina" for KPFK-FM, a pacifica station.
    In 1971, Sandoval co-produced the first Los Lobos album "Los Lobos Del Este De Los Angeles: Just Another Band From East L.A."
    He has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Mexico, and what was the former Soviet Union. He has led EOP students on study/lecture tours to Chiapas, Cuba and Selma, Alabama.
    Sandoval has a Bachelor's Degree in Chicano Studies and a Master's Degree in Education from California State University, Los Angeles. He also attended UCLA, taking graduate course work in motion picture and television production. He has completed all coursework in the doctoral program in Educational Management at the University of La Verne.
    Together, Sandoval and his wife Charon D'Aiello continue to support California State University Los Angeles. On May 7, 2014 the student services center was named Charon D' Aiello Sandoval and David Sandoval Student Center. Both David and Charon D'Aiello are California State University, Los Angeles alumni and retired employees. The event recognized their service to the University and celebrated their generous support of Student Affairs, the Educational Opportunity Program and the Summer Bridge Program.

    Scope and Contents

    The materials in this collection were created from 1944-2008. The bulk of the collection are writings and publications collected by David Sandoval former EOP Director at California State University, Los Angeles from 1981-2008. The writings and publications contains presentations from David Sandoval, magazines, journals, newspapers dealing with civil rights issues and the struggles of low-income and educationally disadvantaged students. Included in the collection are materials and documents related to Sandoval's interest and work in television production. The materials in this collection also included University Times Newspapers, these were taken out of the collection and integrated into the University Times Newspaper Collection.
    Series I: Writings/Publications Inclusive Dates: 1944-2008 Arrangement: Alphabetical and there under chronological
    This large series consists of five subseries: a. Magazines/Journals, 1968-2002; b. Reports/Studies, 1969-1991; c. Articles, 1966-1996; d. Newsletters, 1971- 1989; e. Presentations, 1969-1990; f. Student Papers, 1993, and g. Other Publications. Most noteworthy magazines/journals are Con Safos, La Raza, and La Raza Yearbook. Con Safos and La Raza magazines were one of the first breakthrough Chicano literary periodicals of the 60's and 70's. This series also includes Open Letter Newsletter from 1971, which was produced by California State College Los Angeles MECHA Students. Another Newsletter includes Chilam Balam from 1972, which is La Raza Libre Newsletter publication of the University of California Santa Barbara. In addition, a presentation by David Sandoval in 1990 is also included in this series the presentation was to the County of Los Angeles Commission on Human Relations on the Limited life opportunity's for Black and Latino Youth in Economically depressed areas, the presentation is titled, "Barriers to Achievement: The Need for Remedies." This series also includes the Educational Opportunity Program Cal State La Video Catalog from 1998 it includes a list of videos within twenty two categories some of which are African American, Art, Asian American, Chicano/Latino/Hispanic, Civil Rights and Community. Also included is a draft from 1976 by Howard S. Erlanger with the collaboration of Fred Persily titled Estrangement, machismo, and gang violence. The draft is titled Estrangement, Political involvement and Gang Violence.
    Series II: Newspapers Inclusive Dates: 1971-2008 Arrangement: Alphabetical and there under chronological
    This small series includes Newspapers and newspaper clippings collected by David Sandoval through the years from 1971-2008. The series is organized into two subseries: a. Newspapers and b. Newspaper Clippings. Some of the issues included are The Chronical of Higher Education, El Partido La Raza Unida Habla, El Popo and La Gente. El Popo newspaper was first published in 1970 by students concerned about the lack of Chicano perspective newspapers. La Gente is a publication from UCLA, which has provided news and opinion of minority from UCLA since 1971.
    Series III: California State University, Los Angeles related Documents Inclusive Dates: 1965-1996 Arrangement: Alphabetical and thereunder chronological
    This small series consists of documents and materials related to California State Los Angeles that were kept by David Sandoval. One of the most noteworthy materials in this series is the CCHE State College caucus from1969-1971. This file contains information on the Biltmore "5", transcripts from a juvenile court case, and the CCHE state College Caucus of 1971. Another noteworthy file in this series is the Latin American Studies Struggles, which contains letters to the California State University, Los Angeles President James Rosser in 1985 urging him to keep the Latin American center at CSULA. Letters were sent to the president from Members of Congress, faculty from various universities across the country, community centers, and CSULA Staff and faculty.
    Series IV: Subject/Topical Files Inclusive Dates: 1967-2003 Arrangement: Alphabetical and there under chronological
    This series consist of files of David Sandoval's research and interests on a variety of topics such as Aztlán, the history of Jarocho, El Teatro Campesino, the origins and development of Cuban Music in the 20th century, and information about MECHA in the 1970s.
    Series V: Announcements/Events Inclusive Dates: 1988-2003 Arrangement: Alphabetical and there under chronological
    This small series is organized into two subseries: a. Programs/Flyers and b. News Releases and Press Releases. Included in the series are various events that took place at California State University, Los Angeles such as A Cultural Diversity Day Event in Celebration of Malcolm X, Presentation and information on assistant directors training program, The Chicano Movement Cal State LA 1998, Cal State LA and four brown hats present The Last Angry Brown Hat play produced by Ernesto Quintero in 1998. This series also includes press releases on the film Break of Dawn based on the true story of Pedro J. Gonzalez, a Los Angeles radio star who was falsely imprisoned because he spoke out against corrupt Los Angeles officials during the Depression.
    Series VI: Photographers Inclusive Dates: 1988-1998 Arrangement: Alphabetical and there under chronological
    This small series consists of photographs from the film Break of Dawn, California State University Los Angeles commencement and campus photographs, and the Fist of Sun Poems event by Ferruccio Bruganaro at California State University Los Angeles.
    Series VII: Posters Inclusive Dates: 1986-1995 Arrangement: Alphabetical and there under chronological
    This small series consists of five posters one of which includes Rodolfo F. Acuna v. Regents of the University of California, Santa Barbara Poster. The case revolves around Acuna applying in 1990 for a position in the Chicano Studies Department of the University of California, Santa Barbara. Despite his impressive credentials, he was turned down. Members of the department, who had voted to hire him, were overruled by a review committee. Acuna sued the University of California Regents in 1992. On October 30, 1995, he won a milestone victory when a multiracial jury in Los Angeles agreed that he had been discriminated against. This series also includes a poster of the PBS Special, Chicano! History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement from 1996.
    Series VIII: Ephemera Inclusive Dates: 2008 Arrangement: Alphabetical and there under chronological
    This small series consists of five items which include two t-shirts, a bag, a flag, and bumper sticker. The bag is from the 8th Trinational Coalition to Defend Public Education conference. The Coalition had its beginnings in 1993 and funded by teacher unions from Canada, Mexico, and the United States in an effort to organize a formal, educator-driven commission. The series also includes a bumper sticker from 2001 Boycott of Taco Bell. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), a grass roots community organization of mostly Latino, Haitian, and Mayan Indian farmworkers- began organizing to confront sweatshop conditions in the fields of Florida. In 2001 CIW launched the first-ever farmworker boycott of a fast-food corporation against Taco Bell.
