    The collection is made up of a purchase from the Argonaut Book Shop, January 1956, and from Laurence Lingle, August 1972.

    Biographical Note

    Wellington C. Burnett (1828-1907) was born in Connecticut and joined the U.S. Army, serving in the Mexican War. He then attended Harvard Law School and practiced law in Chicago. In 1852, Burnett came to California, where he served as state senator, settled in San Francisco and practiced law, and was elected city and county attorney during 1870-1878.

    Scope and Content

    The collection consists of letters, documents, manuscripts, business papers, and maps related to Wellington C. Burnett (1828-1907), his wife, Jane Cleveland Burnett, and the Burnett and Cleveland families. There are also materials about early California and Burnett's involvement with veterans of the Mexican War. Also included is Burnett's journal containing an account of his experiences during the Mexican War.
