Background

Scope and content:

Letters, photographs, ephemera and a large scrapbook created and collected by Mary ("Mollie") Stoddard, president of the Los Angeles Florence Crittenton Home. The scrapbook documents mentions of and stories about the Home, and is annotated throughout. On the inside front cover are a number of inscriptions written by Mollie, including one indicating that she started the scrapbook in 1913, and another indicating that she wished it to be transferred to the Pioneer Lodge in Placerville after her death. The papers and photographs that accompany the scrapbook, dating as early as 1911, consist of personal and business correspondence, minutes of the California Military Welfare Committee, and reports on the prevention of veneral disease. The photographs include two portraits of Mollie, unidentified individuals and buildings. Also included are photographs of children used as illustrations in a report on child welfare.

Biographical / historical:

Mary ("Mollie") Wilcox Stoddard (later Mary Wilcox Hurd) was born in Placerville, CA in 1870. After the death of her first husband, Frank Stoddard, she married state senator Henry M. Hurd (who passed away in 1927). Mollie passed away on January 19, 1929 in Los Angeles. In an inscription inside the front cover of the scrapbook dated 1924, Mollie indicated that she wished the scrapbook to be sent to the Pioneer Lodge in Placerville. According to the El Dorado County Historical Society, Mollie built the Lodge and presented it to the Placerville Shakespeare Club (of which there is a postcard in the papers). [See http://www.eldoradocountyhistoricalsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/September-2001.pdf]. Mollie was a long time supporter and president of the Los Angeles Florence Crittenton Home.
