    Biographical / Historical Notes

    Frank P. Frary (1857-1911), a native of Ohio, moved to San Diego, California in 1875 as an agent of a stage company which operated stages between San Diego and Santa Ana. It also held a government contract for carrying mail to and from Julian. Throughout 1877, he was employed as a handy man to Lew Guillame, a beekeeper, in Harbison Canyon. Later, he and a friend, Frank Foster, started the San Diego and Julian City Stage Line. Frank Frary was elected mayor of San Diego in 1901 and served in that capacity until 1905. He married Maud Thayler, a schoolteacher and native of San Francisco in 1886. They had two daughters, Ruth Thayer and Gladys May Frary.

    Scope and Content

    This collection contains diaries and other papers of Frank P. Frary, a stagecoach company agent who started the San Diego and Julian City Stage Line and served as Mayor of San Diego, CA from 1901-1905.
    Frary’s diaries regard day-to-day life in San Diego between 1876 and 1886. He writes of parties he attended, his daily tasks, shootings, sickness, and his own wedding day. The 1882 diary provides a detailed record of Frary’s trip from San Diego to Lansing, Michigan by railroad. He provides observations of the countryside and towns he passes through as well as technical details of the freight the train was carrying and when engines and cars were switched throughout the trip.
    Additional papers include correspondence, business cards, calling cards, and a receipt.
