Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains diaries and other papers of Frank P. Frary, a stagecoach company agent who started the San Diego and Julian City Stage Line and served as Mayor of San Diego, CA from 1901-1905.

Frary’s diaries regard day-to-day life in San Diego between 1876 and 1886. He writes of parties he attended, his daily tasks, shootings, sickness, and his own wedding day. The 1882 diary provides a detailed record of Frary’s trip from San Diego to Lansing, Michigan by railroad. He provides observations of the countryside and towns he passes through as well as technical details of the freight the train was carrying and when engines and cars were switched throughout the trip.

Additional papers include correspondence, business cards, calling cards, and a receipt.
