    Scope and Contents

This collection consists of theses written by USC students from 1910 through the 1930s within the Economics department and the newly founded Sociology Department. All the papers in this collection pertain to California--chiefly the Los Angeles area. Topics covered include labor unions, agriculture such as cotton and oranges, juvenile delinquency, wages in various industries such as laundries and garment factories, etc.

    Biographical / Historical

This collection of student papers and theses appear to have been the provenance of prominent USC sociology professor, Dr. Emory S. Bogardus, who helped establish one of the first sociology departments at an American university (USC) in 1915. Before 1915, sociology topics were taught as part of the Economics department, as evidenced by the papers in this collection. Many of the papers written before 1915 were submitted as part of an Economics Seminar (various years) taught by Dr. Bogardus and/or Dr. Rockwell Hunt. Later papers were submitted for Sociology or Psychology classes.
