    Abstract: This collection contains the Signs in the Windows: A San Francisco COVID Community Time Capsule art project, which was created by artist Hazel O'Neil in response to a call for submissions by SFAC, supported by SFPL. It is the result of a 9-month process of conducting interviews and translating first-person accounts of the pandemic into a roughly chronological narrative accompanying 80 original illustrations drawn by O'Neil.     Conditions Governing Access

    The collection is available for use during San Francisco History Center hours, with photographs available during Photo Desk hours. Collections that are stored offsite should be requested 48 hours in advance.

    Publication Rights

    All requests for permission to publish or quote from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the City Archivist. Permission for publication is given on behalf of the San Francisco Public Library as the owner of the physical items.

    This collection was donated directly to the library by the artist and SFAC in April, 2023.

    During processing, the entire collection was re-foldered and re-housed in acid-free folders and boxes.

    Biography

    Hazel O'Neil is a visual artist, storyteller, and at the time of this writing, an urban planning master's student at MIT. She has done work for NPR Next Generation Radio, KUT Austin 90.5 FM, Foster Care Film, and the Sunset Beacon/Richmond Review. She has contributed to a number of animated films as a storyboard artist and animator.

    Scope and Content

    This collection contains the Signs in the Windows: A San Francisco COVID Community Time Capsule art project, which was created by artist Hazel O'Neil in response to a call for submissions by SFAC, supported by SFPL. It consists of 80 illustrations drawn by O'Neil accompanying a roughly chronological narrative of the COVID pandemic using interviews and other firsthand accounts of local San Francisco residents. The interviews conducted for and used in this art project are not included in this collection.

    This collection is arranged in its original order, with a title page and artist statement followed by the bulk of the illustrations, page numbered 1 through 79.
