Biography / Administrative History
Dorothy Walter Baruch was born August 5, 1899 in San Francisco, California. She attended
Bryn Mawr College (1917-1919) and the University of Southern California (1919-1920). She
also attended the Broadoaks School of Education in Pasadena, California to earn her
Kindergarten-Primary School Training School Certificate (1930), Master of Education in
Child Research (1931), and Bachelor of Education (1931). She went on to earn her PhD from
what is now the Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California as a member of the
first graduating class in 1937. With her education, Baruch organized the Gramercy
Cooperative Nursery School (1924–1927) in Los Angeles, California, and returned to
Broadoaks (1930-1940) and Claremont Graduate University (1944-1945) as a professor. She
also opened a private practice as a consulting psychologist. In addition to working in
education and child psychology, Baruch also authored over 20 children's books and numerous
articles, including works on children and World War II. Baruch died at age 63 on September
4, 1962 in Los Angeles, California.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The Dorothy W. Baruch (1899-1962) Collection includes typed and handwritten manuscripts,
articles, editing notes, diplomas, awards, correspondence, a calendar, and other materials
documenting Baruch's life as a teacher, children's psychologist, and author of books for
parents and children. Included in the collection are four diplomas awarded to Baruch:
Kindergarten-Primary School Training School Certificate from Broadoaks in Pasadena,
California, Master of Education in Child Research from Broadoaks, Bachelor of Education from
Broadoacks, and a PhD. from the Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, California. She was
the first person to graduate from Claremont Graduate School - then Claremont University
College - in 1937. Aside from her degrees, Baruch's various manuscripts and published
articles in the collection make evident the esteemed work she did in her field. The texts
illuminate her exploration of child trauma associated with World War II and her goal to
bridge cultural gaps through her writing. Included in the manuscripts are two of her
children's books: "Kappa and Farmer Shiba" and "Kobo's Wish." The material on "Kobo's Wish"
also includes a painted woodblock and film containing illustrations from the text. Also of
note in the collection is a medal Baruch received from Parent's Magazine.
