Background
John Casper Branner (1850-1922) was an American geologist and the second president of
Stanford University from 1913 to 1915. His career also included scientific expeditions to
Brazil, where he went as a geologist and botanist, U. S. government geological posts,
academic positions, including that of professor of geology when Stanford University was
established in 1885.
