Description
The collection contains the typed manuscript for the children's book Speedy in Oz by Ruth Plumly Thompson, adorned by sketches of accompanying illustrations by John R. Neill.
Background
Ruth Plumly Thompson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 27, 1891. She began her writing career in 1914 writing a weekly children's column for the Philadelphia Public Ledger. She is best known for continuing the famous Oz series after the original author L. Frank Baum's death in 1919. Between 1921 and 1939, she wrote one Oz book a year. They were all illustrated by John R. Neill, who had also illustrated Baum's Oz books, except for the first one, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Thompson stopped writing Oz books in 1939 and Neill took over, writing three until his death in 1942.
