Abstract:
This education collection features fine art from various queer Latinx artists. Also known as an artificial collection, items were brought together from different origins for the purpose of teaching on a specific subject. The collection is curated by University Archivist, Lizeth Zepeda and currently consists of works from artists Amina Cruz, Maya Gonzalez, Ester Hernández, and Julio Salgado.

Background

Biographical / historical:

Amina Cruz was born and lives in Los Angeles, CA. Her interests are based in queer culture, early 1900's photography techniques, and exploring the space between transformation and identity.

Ester Hernandez (born 1944) is a Chicana artist of Mexican and Yaqui decent. As a child of migrant workers, her art oftens depicts messages of support for women, indigenous peoples, and farmworkers.

Maya Gonzalez (born 1964) is a queer Chicana artist, educator, and author. She cofounded Reflection Press, a POC, queer, and trans-owned publishing house that produces books and materials rooted in holistic, nature-based and anti-oppression frameworks.

Julio Salgado (born 1983) is a gay Mexican-born artist and activist that grew up in Long Beach, California. His work often depicts queer and undocumented peoples.

Subject headings "Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ people", "LGBTQ+ arts" and "LGBTQ+ punk community" were adapted from the Homosaurus, a linked data vocabulary of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) terms. They join existing Library of Congress Subject Headings in an effort to more accurately reflect the communities that they describe.

This collection is organized by artist last name and is then in alphabetical order by name of art piece. The punk photographs of Amina Cruz are in order by date.
