Scope and content:

The Lloyd P. Tevis papers consist of three standard-bound volumes of fieldnotes and one additional section within a standard-bound volume containing works by multiple biologists. These volumes include specimen, habitat, and map sketches and span the years 1939-1950. There are also three folders containing correspondence ranging from the years 1922-1956. Subjects include his publications, fieldwork, and related topics.

Biographical / historical:

Lloyd P. Tevis (1916-2002) graduated from UC Berkeley in 1939 with a major in Zoology. Serving in the army during World War II, around this time Tevis did research at Hastings Natural History Reservation, a Biological Field Station of the University of California and the MVZ. He primarily studied mammals throughout his lifetime, with his most prominent publications being The Dusky-footed Wood Rat, co-authored with Jean Lindsdale and published in 1951, and California Grizzly, co-authored with Tracy I. Storer and published in 1955. Following his time with UC Berkeley, Tevis worked as a biologist with UC Davis and served as the reserve manager & resident research scientist of UC Riverside's Boyd Deep Canyon Desert Research Center in Palm Desert, CA from 1959-1973.
