Background

-
Jameson “Lizzard” Patton (October 25, 1942-February 3, 1992) and Steve Walton (February 23, 1947-September 16, 1992) were a gay couple and longtime residents of 3841 18th Street, the site of the “Hunga Dunga” commune in the 1970s San Francisco. Patton, a former actor and model who helped to form the commune soon after moving to San Francisco in 1970, was also the founder of GreenLeaf Produce. Walton, Patton’s partner from the mid-1970s, was an organic food, photography, and history enthusiast who led the restoration of 3841 18th Street in the late-1970s. The house was featured prominently as the “maison bleue” in Maxime Le Forestier’s 1972 song “San Francisco.” The unprocessed collection includes 1970s photographs and postcards of Hunga Dunga commune members; photographs and correspondence from Patton’s high school and college years in Ohio; clippings, headshots, and other photographs from Patton’s early career as an actor and model in New York City; Walton’s extensive photographs, spanning from the 1960s to 1992, depicting his friends and family, travels, life in San Francisco, work on 3841 18th Street, and relationship with Patton; letters and postcards to Walton, sometimes co-addressed to Patton, from the 1960s to 1992; and Walton’s reference files a number of topics, including pesticides and organic food.
