Series 4. Deputy Coroner Laura Santos papers 1850-2001 (bulk 1968-2001)

Biographical/Historical

Laura (Synhorst) Santos was the first deputy coroner for the Sacramento County Coroner's Office, from 1981 until her retirement in 2004. Santos grew up in the Colonial Heights neighborhood, after her family relocated there from Iowa. After graduating from Hiram Johnson High School in 1968, she worked as a ward clerk in the Sacramento County Hospital. She began working as a clerk for the Sacramento County Coroner's Office in 1973, and was promoted to deputy coroner in 1981. During her time as deputy coroner, she was involved in many infamous murder cases, including those of Dorothea Puente and Richard Trenton Chase, and a Theodore Kaczynski "Unabomber" bombing.

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series contains material created or collected by Santos during her time as deputy coroner for the Sacramento County Coroner's Office. The bulk of the collection is photographic material related to the construction, opening, and employees of the Sacramento County Coroner's Office at 4400 V Street, dating from 1968 to 1981, with some photos showing the workings and demolition of the preceding facilities between 1959 and 1969. Also prominent in this series are documents related to the Dorothea Puente murder investigation dating from 1988 to 1995, including full coroner's reports for Puente's victims and material documenting how the victims were identified. This series also includes material related to the coroner's office and Coroner George Nielsen from 1958 to 2001, with the majority from the early 1980s; copies of inquest synopses from 1850 to 1934; and oversized posterboards (some with mounted photos) related to coroner's inquests from 1850 to 1933.
