Series 4. Deputy Coroner Laura Santos papers 1850-2001 (bulk 1968-2001)

Biographical/Historical

Laura (Synhorst) Santos was the first deputy coroner for the Sacramento County Coroner's Office, from 1981 until her retirement in 2004. Santos grew up in the Colonial Heights neighborhood, after her family relocated there from Iowa. After graduating from Hiram Johnson High School in 1968, she worked as a ward clerk in the Sacramento County Hospital. She began working as a clerk for the Sacramento County Coroner's Office in 1973, and was promoted to deputy coroner in 1981. During her time as deputy coroner, she was involved in many infamous murder cases, including those of Dorothea Puente and Richard Trenton Chase, and a Theodore Kaczynski "Unabomber" bombing.
