    Scope and Contents

    Collection contains five handwritten letters, without postal covers, on buff or blue paper, written from Charles Bendire at Camp Harvey, Oregon, to Mr. A. R. Justice, 1874-1878. Letter [1] 10 December 1874: Bendire describes details (dates, locality of collecting, etc.) of ten bird eggs he collected in Arizona in 1872 and is sending to Justice in a box: "I overhauled my duplicates today and at the same time fricked out a few Arizona eggs for you, which I will send you in the same mail which takes this letter." -- Letter [2] 22 February 1877: Bendire describes eggs he and Justice have exchanged, the quality and availability of exchanges with other collectors around the United States. -- Letter [3] 3 January 1878: After describing numerous samples and sets, Bendire concludes, "I wish you would send me a lit of what you have so that I can tell what to get for you." -- Letter [4] 18 January 1878: Bendire acknowledges the availability of eggs from Europe, and states some prices which rare American eggs are fetching there. -- Letter [5] 21 January 1878: Bendire describes some sets he received from other collectors, and reports that he will send to Justice eggs from Germany and also will forward some skins he received.
