Scope and Contents

Performance and exhibition files document various performances by The Waitresses staged in restaurants, festivals, and conferences throughout California, New York, and one performance in Edinburgh, Scotland. The series also documents exhibitions about The Waitresses, feminist performance art from the 1970s and 1980s, and the social issues The Waitresses addressed through their performances. The materials include notes and correspondence, press clippings, scripts, ephemera, fliers, postcards, posters, costumes, props, and photographic and audiovisual material.

Arrangement

The series is divided into performance and exhibition files. Files within each group are further arranged chronologically.

Scope and Contents

Publications and Waitresses history document the reception and legacy of The Waitresses's performances as recorded in various press clippings and books written about the group, as well as performance art and feminist art from the 1970s and 1980s. Also included in the series are administrative records, correspondence, ephemera, and audiovisual recordings of The Waitresses: A Video Retrospective, 1977-1984.
Several publications have been transferred to the Getty Research Library's general collections, including exhibition catalogs, cookbooks, newsletters, magazines, and books. These publications relate to women's history, restaurant architecture, cooking, feminism, and political art. These can be searched in the online catalog under the search phrase "Waitresses Collection."

Arrangement

The series is arranged topically by press, research files, book files, and administrative documents. Materials are further arranged chronologically within each topic.
