    Scope and Contents

    Land deed for the sale of 1/3 of the lands in Placer County about one mile north of Auburn "known as the George Stephens Milk Ranch" to Minerva C. Cole from W. B. Cutting. Dated May 12th, 1858. Signed by Cutting and E. W. Hillyer, Notary Public. The ranch was built by George Stephens who built a billiard saloon and theater in Auburn in 1855 and the American Hotel in 1856. Hillyer served in the Civil War for the 4th California Volunteer Infantry. He moved to Carson City and served as prosecuting attorney in Storey County before being appointed US District Judge for Nevada. [Description provided by William Allison Books]
