Biographical note
Stephen Joe Stewart was born November 23, 1953 in southern California. He graduated from California State University, Los
Angeles with a Bachelor of Arts. During the 1970s and 1980s he was employed as a advertising artist and freelance photographer
in Hollywood. His work appeared in the
Advocate, prior to his three year journey to document lesbian and gay history. Subsequent to publishing
Positive Image he wrote
Gay Hollywood,
The Voyeur Video Guide, and other titles using the name, Steve Stewart. He has also published under the pseudonym, Bruce Wayne.

Stewart's photographs formerly housed in the ONE subject files were brought together in this collection. Collection processed

Scope and Contents
The collection primarily consists of Stephen Stewart's published and unpublished black and white photographs from his work,
Positive Image: A Portrait of Gay America, along with a few other Stewart photographs. Stewart sought to document the people, places, events, and symbols of the United
States gay liberation movement. From 1982 to 1984, he traveled the United States photographing gay men, lesbians, and iconic
places and events. The photographs of the West Hollywood incorporation include 6 photographs documenting voter registration
and election night.
