    Gifted to The Bancroft Library in 2014 from the Robert Anthony Scalapino and Ida Mae Jessen Scalapino 1985 Revocable Trust.

    Biographical / Historical

    Robert Anthony Scalapino (1919-2011) came to the University of California, Berkeley as an assistant professor in 1949, achieving full professor status in 1956. He was chair of Department of Political Science from 1962 to 1965. He founded and was the first director of the Institute of East Asian Studies from 1978 to 1990 when he took emeritus status. He sat on the board of directors of the Council on Foreign Relations and was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was editor of the scholarly journal, Asian Survey, from 1962 to January 1996.

    Processing Information

    The Robert A. Scalapino papers are minimally processed and may be difficult to use. The collection is housed in original folders (without Bancroft markings) and intellectually arranged according to Scalapino's office filing system. Like materials are often physically scattered through a range of containers but the finding aid intellectually brings collection materials together according to Scalapino's filing plan.

    Scope and Contents

    Includes personal and professional papers of Robert Scalapino, particularly during his time as director of the Institute of East Asian Studies. Correspondence with individuals, professional organizations, and campus officials make up the bulk of the collection. Subject files and organizational files for the centers within the Institute of East Asian Studies, and files for published papers are also included.
