Mr. Smith founded the Disumbrationist school of art in 1924 to protest criticism of his wife's (Sarah Bixby Smith) traditional paintings. Under the pseudonym Pavel Jerdanowitch, he earned critical acclaim for his modernist paintings throughout the art world.
