- Charles E. Shelton (1914-2002) was a newspaper and book publisher in Southern California. He published and edited the Azusa Herald and the Glendora Press, published The Desert Magazine, and founded the weekly Palm Desert Post. Shelton also established Best West Publications and ran the Southwest Desert Art Gallery in Palm Desert with his wife, Kathleen Gunn Shelton. The collection contains 91 negatives and 15 prints of the U.S. southwest that Shelton gathered when compiling his book Photo album of yesterday's southwest (1961).

The collection contains 91 negatives and 15 prints of the U.S. southwest that Shelton gathered when compiling his book Photo album of yesterday's southwest which was published by Desert Magazine in Palm Desert California in 1961. The images were collected from a variety of libraries, museums and historical societies in and around the southwest. There is also an unbound proof copy of the book in the collection.

Charles E. Shelton, was a native of Glendora and graduate of Pomona College, and made his career in newspaper and book publishing in Southern California. After graduating from Pomona College in 1935, he worked for the Los Angeles Times as a junior sports writer. An R.O.T.C member in college, he was called to duty in 1941. He served through World War II in the Pacific Theater as a Press Officer for the Army Air Corps. After the war, Shelton published and edited the Azusa Herald and the Glendora Press. In the 1960s, he published The Desert Magazine, founded the weekly Palm Desert Post, and, with his wife, Kathleen Gunn Shelton, established Best West Publications, publisher of books on southwestern art and travel. They also ran the Southwest Desert Art Gallery in Palm Desert for a number of years.
