Scope and content:

Anaïs Nin began writing her diary at the age of 11 and continued throughout her life. The publication of her diaries, beginning in 1966, coincided with the feminist movement and made her an international celebrity. After her death, unexpurgated editions of her diaries were published. The diaries evolved through the years, beginning with daily entries and thoughts on various subjects. In later years, her diaries became a collection of letters, essays and ephemera collected in portfolios.
