- Extent:

This series contains material related to J. Hillis Miller's published and unpublished writing. It includes notes, articles, lectures, reviews, and publication files. The notes subseries consists of class notebooks from his student days at Oberlin and Harvard, journals, and a small number of subject files on authors and literary works. The articles, lectures, and reviews subseries contains material from Miller's shorter works, and includes notes, manuscripts, edited and annotated drafts, proofs, offprints, publication material, and correspondence. Because many essays and lectures were later reworked into book chapters, or vice versa, some titles appear in both this series and the books subseries. The books subseries contains material from twenty-four of Miller's longer works. It includes preparatory notes, handwritten manuscripts, annotated and edited drafts, galley proofs, correspondence with publishers and editors, as well as other publication and printing information.
- Arrangement:
-
The notes subseries is arranged in three sections:
- Student notebooks,1944-1948
- Journals, 1953-2004, undated
- Subject files, 1933-1996
Articles, lectures, and reviews are arranged chronologically. The books subseries is arranged by date of publication or initial creation if an unpublished work.
