This series is comprised of photographs, slides, negatives, correspondence, and other documents pertaining to approximately 160 projects. There are no drawings in the collection, only a few minor sketches. Arranged alphabetically by project name, Series I covers the majority of Johnson's work - from student projects undertaken in 1940s to projects still being negotiated and/or constructed as of 1996. See Series II for the structures Johnson designed for his New Canaan, CT estate. The materials included in these files range in size and format from 2" x 2" slides to 14" x 11" photographs of presentation renderings, but the bulk of the material consists of 8" x 10" photographs. Although a large percentage of the photographs are of architectural drawings, many are of buildings. The photographs of architectural drawings are listed according to type: plan, elevation, section, detail, or rendering. Furthermore, the sums listed for the photographs reflect the number of items in total and not necessarily the number of originals, as there are many duplicates throughout the files.
