Wagner was born on September 27, 1862 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; A.B. (1884), LL.B (1886), L.H.D. (1946), Yale University; D.Litt. (1935), Pomona College; LL.D (1949), University of California at Berkeley; admitted to Missouri bar in 1887 and began practicing in Kansas City; became member of the executive committee (1918-20), the vice president (1920-21), American Smelting and Refining Company, New York; began to collect books, and made contributions to the history and bibliography of Latin America and the American West; member, American Antiquarian Society; published works include Sir Francis Drake's Voyage Around The World: Its Aims and Achievements (1926), Spanish Voyages to the Northwest Coast of America in the Sixteenth Century (1929), and The Grabhorn Press: a Catalogue of Imprints in the Collection of Henry R. Wagner (1938); he died on March 28, 1957.
