Scope and content:

Series II comprises Sekula's vast archive of slides, negatives, color film, and contact prints. The series features preliminary materials that Sekula generated for each of his projects as well as documentation of his projects. Some binders are devoted to photographs of Swkula's wife, Sally Stein, and other family members.

Sekula referred to all medium-format 120 color film as 6 x 7 cm despite variations in image width. Blank exposures were not counted.

Labels, numbers, and titles assigned by Sekula have been retained. File titles are from Sekula's folder labels. Inconsistencies in Sekula's abbreviations were addressed by the archivists' decision to spell out abbreviations. Unidentified abbreviations, as well as widely recognized ones such as LA (Los Angeles), UC (University of California), NYC (New York City), and DC (District of Columbia), have been retained for clarity and consistency. Titles for folders lacking labels were supplied by the archivists and are enclosed in brackets.

Processing information:

This series was processed by Emmabeth Nanol and Judy Chou. The number of exposures, found at the binder level, were counted by a work-study student, Samuel Pérez, under the supervision of Emmabeth Nanol.

Arrangement:

Series II is arranged in two groups: unlabeled binders and labeled binders. Unlabeled binders are filed chronologically; labeled binders follow these and are arranged alphabetically. Labels that appear in multiple binders, such as Barcelona, Black Tide, Dead Letter Office, Documenta 12, Fish Story, installation shots, final selections, LA, and Polonia, are grouped under their appropriate titles.Binders labeled Miscellaneous and Duplicates are filed at the end of the series.
