Scope and content:

Contains photographs of members swimming recreationally and in competitive events in the San Francisco Bay and a few other locations. Photographs include recreational and competitive swimming at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Amusement Park; many Golden Gate Swim competitions; the New Year's Day Morning Swim; the Gas House Cove Swim; the Alcatraz Swim; the Fort Point Swim; the SERC-Dolphin Club Swim; the 1984 round-trip Alcatraz swim completed by Camille Manger and Laurey Greider; the first Bay to Breakers Swim; the South End Bay Bridge to Club Swim; and a photograph of the Trans Tahoe Relay Team.

There are also photographs of awards being received or celebrated, pilot boats (for swimmers' safety) at events and spectators at the Lime Rock Lighthouse. Many of the individuals in the photographs are identified, often wearing their South End bathing suits and clothing. Although not a SERC member, Hazel B. Laugenour's accomplishment of being the first woman to swim The Golden Gate in 1911 is documented in these photographs (she is, however, wearing a SERC bathing suit). Women members are present as competitors in events in photographs beginning in 1977.

Black-and-white and color photographic prints and negatives. Some of the photographic prints are stuck to glass, have had something spilled on them, are torn, or are very fragile.

Biographical / historical:

Swimming became a popular activity at the SERC club starting in the 1930s-1940s. It appears that the first Golden Gate Swim took place in 1930 (based on information written on photos) and that the swims take place at the end of September.
