Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains (15) fifteen mimeographed issues of a newsletter sent to members of the 13th Division Railway Mail Association serving in the military, 1943-1945. The "13th Division Railway Mail Association" refers to a specific division within the former Railway Mail Service (RMS) of the United States Postal Service. This division, like others, was responsible for sorting and distributing mail en route via train, connecting various towns and cities. It was one of several divisions that managed the complex logistics of moving mail across the country by rail.

The newsletters were edited by Glenn E. Brown of Spokane, Washington and highlight news related to the 13th Division. Issues include updates about current stateside staffing and mention employees by name. Details include names of employees, new job positions / locations as well as details about those who passed away. Some of the newsletters have a section dedicated to a specific location within the 13 Division, areas highlighted are Portland, Seattle and Pocatello. As mail clerks joined military service, their locations and status are updated in the newsletters. Brown encouraged railroad mail clerks to keep him updated with their location and what they were doing; Brown would include this information in the newsletters.

In each newsletter edition, there are hand drawn illustrations by Wayne McVey. The original pen and ink / pencil and ink drawings done by Wayne McVey's used in the newsletter are part of this collection.
