Mischa Elman Rogers Service (May 18, 1915 – November 14, 1996) was an American anthropological theorist of cultural evolution, credited for his development of an evolutionary scheme that continues to be used in modern studies of social evolution.
In 1941, Service earned a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from the University of Michigan, before he joined the army to serve in World War II. Upon his return, he earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Columbia University in 1951, and taught anthropology there from 1949 to 1953. He then taught back at the University of Michigan from 1953 until 1969, before he joined as a faculty member at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he taught from 1969 until his retirement in 1985. In addition to his academic career, he also served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the American Ethnological Society and was a member of the American Anthropological Association.
He published several important books throughout his career - with titles such as Profiles in Ethnology, Primitive Social Organization, and The Hunters adopted as textbooks. He also worked closely with his wife, Helen "Stevie" Stephenson Service, co-authoring Tobati: Paraguayan Town detailing their ethnological work in Paraguay.
