Stock books, 1872-1977

Extent:
83 Linear Feet (60 boxes)
Scope and content:

The 60 stock books document acquisitions of paintings, watercolors and other artworks made by M. Knoedler & Co. in New York and in the firm's other offices. Each entry lists the seller from whom Knoedler bought the artwork, and the artist, title and date of the work. Also included is brief information regarding the buyer who purchased the work from Knoedler, along with the sales date.

There are entries relating to the acquisitions of watercolors in the ledgers described in Series I.A., but the bulk of the transactions relating to watercolors are recorded in ledgers listed in Series I.B. M. Knoedler & Co. did not maintain stock books dedicated to artworks such as sculptures, tapestries, or medals. Rare transactions for these are listed in the ledgers described in Series I.A.

Selected stock books have been digitized and made available online. Connect to digitized stock books.
