Background
- Scope and content:
-
This hybrid collection contains physical and born-digital materials compiled or created by historian Ryan M. Kray, 2009 Ph.D. graduate of the University of California, Irvine, while conducting research about efforts by the city of Palm Springs, California, to control, disenfranchise, and expel people of color from the city from the 1880s through the 1960s. The bulk of the collection dates from 1950-1970.
Physical materials consist predominantly of photocopies of news articles pertaining to the history of Palm Springs and the surrounding areas, and the city's efforts to control, disenfranchise, and expel people of color from the city. The Press, Desert Sun, Limelight, Riverside Enterprise, and Riverside Daily Press are the primary publications included. City documents and meeting minutes, interviews with people who were forcibly removed, and other city-related publications are also included in the collection.
The majority of digital materials in this collection are video recordings with people who were the targets of forced removal efforts from city limits by the city of Palm Springs, California. Each digital video recording is accompanied by at least one transcript. Other digital materials in this collection include Ryan M. Kray's dissertation titled "Second-Class Citizenship at a First-Class Resort: Race and Public Policy in Palm Springs," an article by Kray, titled "The Path to Paradise: Expropriation, Exodus, and Exclusion in the Making of Palm Springs," and a report published by the City of Palm Springs titled "Palm Springs City Hall Monument Report." A reparations lawsuit filed by Section 14 victims' families against the City of Palm Springs (settled in 2024) awarded the plaintiffs $5.9 million dollars. Additionally, the agreement included $21 million for a "first-time homebuyer assistance program" as well as other communal benefits for Section 14 descendants and the public at large.
