This small collection chiefly contains handwritten and printed governmental documents related to the reign of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico from 1864 to 1867. Among the items are two 1865 orders signed "Maximiliano"; bound and loosed manuscript and printed government documents dating from 1863-1867, with a number of printed circulars and broadsides; and contemporary manuscript copies of documents. There are also miscellaneous 20th century newspaper clippings about Maximilian and his wife, Carlota, and two photographic portraits, as well as two glass plate negatives, circa 1864, of Maximilian and Carlota.

Austrian archduke Maximilian I (Fernando Maximilano in Spanish) (1832-1867) was the only emperor of the Second Mexican Empire, reigning from 1864 until he was executed on June 19, 1867. He was married to Carlota (1840-1927), Empress consort of Mexico.
