This collection contains materials created and gathered by Marcia Gallo in the course of researching "Different Daughters: A History of the Daughters of Bilitis and the Rise of Lesbian Rights Movement" (2006). Research files include photocopied correspondence, articles, and organizational records related to the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB); letters by Daughters of Bilitis founders Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon introducing Gallo to potential interviewees; Gallo’s oral history consent form; as well as an oral history transcript and correspondence related to Gallo’s research. Personal files include a card from Kay Lahusen, as well as materials related to the 1996 celebration of Del Martin’s 75th birthday in New York City. Interviews with leaders of the Daughters of Bilitis are primarily recorded on microcassettes.

Marcia M. Gallo is a historian, civil liberties advocate, and Professor Emerita of History at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Gallo served as field director for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Northern California between 1981 and 1996. She then attended the Graduate Center at the City University of New York (CUNY), earning a PhD in History in 2004. Before starting at UNLV, Gallo was Assistant Professor of History at Lehman College in the Bronx. In addition to numerous articles and book chapters, Gallo is the author of "Different Daughters: A History of the Daughters of Bilitis and the Rise of the Lesbian Rights Movement" (2006) and "“No One Helped”: Kitty Genovese, New York City, and the Myth of Urban Apathy" (2015). "Different Daughters" was based upon Gallo’s dissertation at CUNY.
