- Biographical / historical:
-
The New Almaden Mine was a mercury mine in Santa Clara County, California. In 1846, Andrรฉs Castillero, an engineer, visited the mine and formed the New Almaden Company. The title to the mine had passed through several hands when the New Almaden Company brought its petition before the U.S. Land Commission in 1852; an official survey of the property was not made until after the American Civil War. Litigation continued for 12 years, and the Quicksilver Mining Company of New York, which had acquired partial title to the mine, was forced to purchase the assets of the New Almaden Company. The Quicksilver Mining Company continued to operate the mine until bankruptcy in 1912.
