Scope and content:

Materials consist of 124 letters, mainly from Pendleton to his fiancรฉe Mary E. Willis (later Mrs. Mary E. Pendleton), 17 telegrams, 1 used postcard and 1 used envelope. Also includes two letters written to Mary E. Willis by "Sister Louise" and "Sister Peggy," one letter by Pendleton to his daughter Mary Lois, two written to "Jean E. Pendleton" by "Brian" and "Don," and one written to "Dear Sister" from "One of the Sisterhood." The letters written by Pendleton were written from various places he was stationed at while serving in the military, including a number of ships. The letters include much of the social life of an officer and his wife, parties, dinners, and other engagements, difficulties of long distance family life, especially with children. There is also much on his naval career as he rises in the ranks and takes on more responsibilities on ships and as a captain of a ship and the various activities of the ships he serves on.

Biographical / historical:

Rear Admiral Perley Earl Pendleton (1897-1964) was born in Concord, New Hampshire. He was the son of Fred and Nellie Pendleton. In 1916 Pendleton entered the US Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1920. He was made Lieutenant Commander in 1936, Commander in 1941, Captain in 1942, and Rear Admiral sometime before 1950 when he retired. Pendleton married Mary E. Willis (1899-1996) on May 26, 1923 in Concord, New Hampshire. The two had at least two children, twins by the name of Brian Willis Pendleton and Mary Lois Pendleton, who were born March 16, 1931.
