Background
- Scope and content:
-
Alexis Francois (1936-2023) was a drag queen, hair stylist, and wig maker and connoisseur in San Francisco from late 1960s to the early 2000s. This collection spans 1954 to the late 2010s and contains photographs and correspondence from both her personal and professional life. Francois kept detailed photographic records of her costumes and many of the photographs in this collection are of her performances and reference photos of her costumes and wigs. In addition to photographs that showcase her professional life, this collection also contains photographs of and correspondence from her family, ex-lovers, and friends as well numerous snapshots of her intricately decorated apartment. Notably, there is also the patent for and correspondence about the development of Curl-It, a hairbrush that better keeps curls in place that Francois developed in the 1950s when she was a hair stylist and cosmetologist. Alex Francois was genderfluid and used both she/her and he/him pronouns.
