Scope and content:

This series consists of materials related to Brown's service in the United States House of Representatives and his duties as a Member of Congress. Materials in the series include Brown's legislative records, bill files, cosigned letters, voting records, House floor statements, and research materials.

Major topics covered in the series are areas on which Brown frequently focused his legislative efforts, including environmental protection, climate change, alternative energy resources, science and technology policy, international scientific cooperation, civil rights, veterans' affairs, animal welfare issues, space exploration and use, water resources, earthquake preparedness and arms control.

Other historical political events and legislation significantly represented in the series include Brown's strong opposition to President Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, passage of the North American Free Trade Act (NAFTA), Brown's involvement in preserving the Salton Sea in the Imperial Valley, High Definition Television technology, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) Earnings Suspense File.

The series is divided into seven sub-series, with certain sub-series further divided into two year Congressional terms. The sub-series are arranged as follows:
