Acci贸n Latina and El Tecolote pictorial archives, bulk bulk 1970-2016

Posters, prints, drawings, and ephemera, chiefly 1970-2016.

Scope and content:

The posters and prints collection consists of approximately 435 items (617 including duplicates) that either promote Acci贸n Latina events or were collected by the organization.

Many of the posters Acci贸n Latina produced relate to the annual music festival, Encuentro del Canto Popular. Examples date to the first Encuentro in 1982, with the latest example being from the 35th Encuentro in 2016. A large number of the Encuentro posters were designed by Juan R. Fuentes. Posters produced by Acci贸n Latina also advertise benefit concerts for the organization's newspaper, El Tecolote, and other events related to the newspaper. A few posters promote the Paseo Artistico, a Mission District cultural event, of which Acci贸n Latina is one of the sponsors. There are also posters for art exhibitions held in the organization's Juan R. Fuentes Gallery.

The posters collected by Acci贸n Latina promote other San Francisco and California cultural events dating back to 1970, primarily music events, but also art exhibitions held at the Mission Cultural Center and other venues, poetry readings, and Cinco de Mayo, Dia de los Muertos, and Carnaval parades.

Acci贸n Latina also collected a large number of posters related to political activism at the local, statewide, national, and international level. The political posters in the San Francisco and California series tend to advertise events -- chiefly rallies, marches, protests, boycotts, and lectures -- happening at a defined time and place. The political posters in the national and international series are largely designed to promote solidarity and awareness of causes and issues, however some national and international posters refer to conferences or meetings. California causes include: Los Tres, Los Siete, the 1978 Supreme Court Bakke decision, United Farm Workers and boycotts, housing, prison conditions, and immigration. National and international causes include: anti-imperialism, Central and Latin American revolutions and wars, human rights, the Cuban Revolution and Che Guevera. There are a significant number of posters produced by OSPAAAL (Organization of Solidarity of the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America), a Cuban political organization.

Acci贸n Latina also collected artists' prints and other works on paper, including some original drawings. The vast majority of these are by local artists.

Arrangement:

The posters are arranged in subject categories established by the Bancroft Library.

When a poster promotes a political event that takes place in California, it is included in the San Francisco and California political activism series whether the event relates to a local, national, or international cause. Events largely occurred in San Francisco; exceptions are generally noted.

Posters designed by Cuban political organizations (chiefly OSPAAAL, with a few by OCLAE and the Departamento de Orientacion Revolucionaria) are included in the OSPAAAL and other Cuban graphic design sub-series of the National and international political activism series. Posters about the Cuban Revolution or Cuban political figures that are not designed by Cuban graphic designers or agencies can be found in the Various creators subseries of the National and international political activism series.
