This collection consists of files, photographs and audio recordings relating to the research and teaching career of military historian Alvin Coox (1924-1999), particularly pertaining to the 1939 Battle of Nomonhan between Japan and the Soviet Union. Materials include interviews, biographies, correspondence, research files and clippings, audio tapes of interviews, history lessons, etc.

A portion of files in the Coox collection have been digitized in the USC Digital Library.

Biographical / historical:

Alvin D. Coox, a historian of modern Japanese military history, was born in Rochester, New York, in 1924. He earned a bachelor's from New York University and received a master's in history and a doctorate in history and government from Harvard University. In the late 1940s, he taught history at Harvard and was a senior historian at the Johns Hopkins University. In the 1950s and 1960s, he spent fifteen years in Japan, including six years as an intelligence analyst for the United States Air Force. In 1964, Coox began teaching at San Diego State University, and later also served as head of the Center for Asian Studies. He retired in 1995. He wrote eight books, including "Nomonham: Japan Against Russia, 1939" (Stanford University Press, 1986). He died in 1999.
