- Scope and content:

The 34 albumen photographs by Urbain Bassett document the temple complexes of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, including the Bayon temple, as they appeared in the mid-1890s. Included are exterior and interior views of the temples, and details of the relief sculpture and decorations. Four photographs show freestanding sculpture in situ or in storage areas. There is one photograph of a Lieutenant Dubose posed with the members of the French documentary expedition in front of the entrance to Angkor Wat. Another image shows thatched huts lining the entrance to Angkor. Also included is a image of a group of monks seated in a hallway of the palace of Norodum, king of Cambodia.

French sculptor and amateur photographer, Urbain Basset (1842 Grenoble, France-1924 La Tronche, France), was sent to Cambodia by the French government to make casts of the relief sculptures at Angkor.
