The series encompasses the history of the firm as it becomes a corporation, raises capital through stock offerings, and ultimately repurchases the shares and operates with Lunn as the sole stockholder. Included are corporate records, financial statements and tax returns, inventory lists, financial statement working papers, bank records, and a large volume of receipts for travel, business promotion and other business expenses.
Lunn Gallery was established by Harry H. Lunn and a small group of investors in 1968. In 1970-1971, a new group of investors joined with the existing stockholders to form Graphics International Ltd. as a holding company, with Lunn Gallery continuing to be the operating entity. This provided capital for building inventory. Bank financing also provided funds for operations and expansion. All of these developments are documented here.
By August 1982, financial conditions had changed such that Lunn was able to buy out the stockholders, principally with inventory, and become the sole stockholder of the firm, now called Lunn Ltd. Material regarding the civil suit that Clive Gray, one of the largest stockholders, instituted against the company in 1995-1996 is contained in this series.
In July 1983, Lunn closed the gallery at 406 Seventh Street in Washington D. C. and began operating as a private dealer. From then until his death Lunn ran the company by himself, assisted at times by Michael Howells, Wouter Deyrutter, his grown children, and others. Their expenses, as well as business expenses including travel and promotional expenses, are included among the receipts in the series.
Lunn also participated in a few joint real estate ventures which are reflected in this series. In the early 1980s he formed a partnership in which he held a one-third interest to develop six new galleries at 406 Seventh Street, N. W. in Washington, D. C. He also acted as agent for the 1200 East Capitol Company, a condominium project, from 1983 to 1988.
