This collection contains ten letters ranging from April to October 1864 written by Hiram Austin to his wife Susan Austin during the American Civil War. Their home was in Fox Lake, Dodge Co., Wisconsin. Also included in a separate folder are biographical materials relating to the Austin family, before and after Hiram.
The first letters refer to swearing in to the Army and meals/rations in St. Louis, Chicago, and the rest of the letters are from Nashville. Mr. Austin mostly speaks cordially and talks about everyday life with little detail pertaining to the war. He was discharged and returned home around mid-October, 1864.

Hiram Austin (11/18/1823 - 1896) was born in Ferrisburg, Vermont to his parents Nicholas Austin and Harriett Orvis. He married Susan Harriett Ruskell in 1838 and had two children, George (1856) and Lizzie Annie (1867). They lived in Fox Lake, Wisconsin during the Civil War. Hiram passed away in Wichita, Kansas, followed by his wife Susan in 1904.
