The collection consists of letters to Francis Bennoch and his wife, Margaret Bennoch. The letters are primarily from literary friends, and the collection includes letters from Benjamin Robert Haydon, Charles Kingsley, Mary Russell Mitford, John Ruskin, and Martin Farquhar Tupper.
- Biographical / historical:

Francis Bennoch (1812-1890) was born in Scotland and moved to London in 1828 to pursue a career in the mercantile trade; he eventually became head of a firm of wholesale traders and manufacturers. Bennoch also became a patron of the arts and literature and was a member of the Society of Arts, the Royal Society of Antiquaries, the Royal Society of Literature, and the Scottish Literary Institute.
