Approx. 12 items: selection of LAT clips and copies, 1960s, on various aspects of race relations ; 16-pp. headed "Racial attitudes of The Times (1881 -- )," a listing of article headlines or descriptions of articles dealing with race relations, with year and date, ending in 1943, marginal notes were added later indicating which racial group was mentioned in each article, i.e. "Negro," "KKK" [?], "Jap." ;5-pp. of tear sheets from Stanford Today, internal evidence suggests a 1967 date, "Jim Crow journalism" ; tear sheets of four articles from The Bulletin (ASNE), more than one issue has been used, only date seen is 1/1968.

Also in the folder is a flyer announcing - "Freedom Rally...your chance to help Birmingham, Sunday May 26 - 3:p.m., Wrigley Field - Free admission > Hear Rev. M.L. King." The articles range in length from 100 word briefs to long feature stories. Split into two folders.

Ranchos - Rancho Dominguez (San Pedro) 1891 - 1989

Scope and Contents

Approx. 12 items, all but two are photographs, copies of photos, or negatives. Two sheets are headed "A synopsis of 200 years of Rancho Dominguez History" and "Captions" related to photos of the area that was once Rancho Dominguez. Many of the photos show the George Carson home, and Carson family members during period around 1890, others show laborers at work in the fields and with the livestock of Rancho Dominguez. Two photos show developments at the location into the 1970s (?), including Homestead Business Park.

San Jose - Lynching 1933

3 items: three LAT clip copies, one editorial, two news stories, 11/28/1933, "two kidnap and murder suspects were taken from a San Jose jail by a very large mob, and hanged, the controversy was increased when Gov. James Rolph praised the lynching as a "lesson to the nation" that California would not tolerate similar crimes.

Barnes, Florence (Pancho) Lowe 1929 - 1966

Scope and Contents

Approx. 20 items, a collection of LAT clip copies, mostly from 1929-1932, 1952-1954 and the 1960s, on "Pancho" Barnes. She is refereed to in stories (ca. 1930) as a "San Marino aviatrix," she later (ca. 1952) brought suit against the Air Force for damaging her business (bar, hotel, etc) in the Mojave Desert near Edwards Air Force Base, and in the 1960s she made peace with the Air Force but also ran into trouble with the Courts on her own.

This collection includes editorials and news copies from the 1930s until Bonelli's 1970 death. Material is mostly from LAT, with additional items from the L.A. tabloid, The Mirror.

Bonelli, William - Correspondence 1953 - 1989

Scope and Contents

Approx. 10 items: In 1953, The Mirror exposed William Bonelli's Mafia connections and involvement in racketeering. In 1954, Bonelli, long-time member of the State Board of Equalization, authored a book, Billion Dollar Blackjack - the story of corruption and the Los Angeles Times. As the title suggests, this book was a strong condemnation of LAT and the Chandlers (publishers). Later Bonelli brought a lawsuit against The Mirror, another Chandler-owned newspaper, for "certain false published statements." This collection includes memos, letters, legal documents, press releases, etc. Also included is a complete copy of Los Angeles Underground (1954?), which reprinted the entire aforementioned book because, as the issue says, it was "suppressed in Los Angeles."

McPherson, Aimee Semple 1926 - 1988

Approx. 20 items: LAT, 5/19/1926, report of evalgelist Aimee Semple McPherson disappearing off Venice Beach, headline "...M'Pherson believed bathing victim," and her later reappearance and evidence that she may have been in a love tryst with an unemployed radio station operator, Kenneth Ormiston. After McPherson resurfaced, 6/23/1926, claiming abduction (a ransom letter had been delivered to Angeles Temple, Aimee's headquarters), she and her mother are subpoenaed to appear before the Grand Jury. In 9/1926. complaints including corruption of public morals, obstruction of justice and conspiracy were brought against McPherson, her alleged paramour, and others. The convoluted case moves through the legal system, but in 1/1927, it is dismissed as it was believed it would be impossible to convict. The letters begin with a controversy over an American Civil Liberties Union fundraising party to be held at the home of Trumbo. Steve Allen, an influential liberal in Hollywood, felt it was an inappropriate choice of location based on issues that are explained in his letters. As the correspondence stretches across May, June, July and into August,many sarcastic and humorous exchanges take place. It is not clear how copies of these letters came into the possession of James Bellows of LAT.

Scope and Contents

The Los Angeles Times Addenda series numbers 14 boxes and contains annual and interim reports, press releases, executive rosters and guest books, and speeches by Times executives. It was added to the collection in 2008 and primarily reflects the activities of the Times and its executives circa 1980-2000. Annual reports from 1944-1989 were interfiled into existing Business Department Annual Report files. Duplicates in excess of 3 copies were deaccessioned. Includes media for select speeches (3.5" floppy discs and cassette tape recordings). Date range is 1961-2001.
