Architectural Projects
circa 1939-1989
Scope and Contents note
The Architectural projects series contains drawings, reproductive prints, photographs, specifications, printed ephemera and
manuscript notes related to Walter White designs from circa 1939 through 1996. Most of White's early work was in Los Angeles,
Palm Desert, Palm Springs and nearby desert towns in California. His work in Colorado, dating primarily from the 1960s through
the 1980s, was centered largely in Colorado Springs. Large files of drawings and related documents relate to White's modular
system for small, vacation houses, various solar designs and experiments, and structures that used wide span Hypar roofs,
such as aquatic centers, buildings for manufacture, and airplane hangers. The bulk of White's practice consisted of the design
of residential buildings. His houses document his persistent concern for controlling light, temperature, and the extreme climates
of desert and mountains by means of passive design.
