Ruth-Marion Baruch photographs 1944-1978 1936-1998

Scope and Contents

This series includes more than 2400 black and white gelatin silver prints, ranging in size from 3x4 to 11x14, almost all of which were printed by Baruch. A small number of 16x20 non-vintage gelatin silver prints from The Black Panthers and the Haight-Ashbury projects were printed posthumously at the time of the Black Power * Flower Power exhibition and publication. Although the collection is comprised mostly of fine art prints, Baruch printed numerous ferrotype glossies for some of her projects, including The Black Panthers.
The series represents the entirety of Baruch's work, from the earliest 1940s prints, taken during her time as a college student and novice photographer, to her later works in portraiture as a seasoned artist. Social consciousness permeated Baruch's themes centered around women, children, youth, and race, as evidenced by her most famous projects, such as The Black Panthers, Haight-Ashbury, and Walnut Grove, as well as her lesser-known works like Renaissance Faire, Zoo, and Children, They Grow in the City.

Arrangement

The prints are arrranged chronologically by the start date of the project or series.

Marin City 1960-1961

Historical note

Marin City, between Sausalito and Mill Valley in Marin County, was developed for housing during World War II by the Bechtel Company to accommodate shipyard workers and other migrants to California. Many African Americans who came from the South in the Great Migration continued to live in Marin City after the war, either by choice or because of zoning retrictions in other communities. By the 1960s, a majority of the population of Marin City was African American, many of them descendants of the Marinship workers.

Illusion for Sale 1961

Scope and Content

This is a series of candid photographs depicting women shopping in department stores in San Francisco's Union Square. Among the portraits are images of women and schoolgirls trying on dresses and accessories, and interactions between sales associates and customers.

HIstorical Note

The subjects were unaware that they were being photographed. In Baruch's own words, this series "present[s] the world of buying and selling in its imaginative reality." In 1970, Baruch collaborated with poet James Schevill on an unpublished book titled To Buy or to Sell: Illusion for Sale, which includes the photographs from the project and 35 original poems by Schevill, each corresponding with a photograph. These photographs were first exhibited in 1966 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Walnut Grove 1961

Scope and Contents

Prints from this collaboration include the original exhibition set of dry mounted prints, additional fine art prints, and ferrotype glossies. The images depict the photographers' interpretation of the small Northern California Delta town of Walnut Grove and the people who lived there. Also included are two exhibition text panels written by Baruch.

Historical Note

The photographers focused their attention on the east side of Walnut Grove, a racially diverse community that was displaced by a freeway on the Sacramento River Delta, resulting in economic hardship and decline. Ruth-Marion Baruch and Pirkle Jones collaborated on this project, which was exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to critical acclaim.

Haight-Ashbury 1967

Scope and Contents

In this series Baruch documents the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco in 1967 during the Summer of Love. The photographs are primarily portraits of young people who embodied the countercultural ideals for which the district became famous. Also included are photographs of the handpainted and handwritten signs offering services and advice, and reflecting the Summer of Love's drug culture, as well as the anti-war, anti-police brutality, and anti-capitalist messages that were prevalent in that time and place.

Historical Note

Haight-Ashbury was considered the epicenter of late sixties youth countercultures, specifically hippies, the Diggers, psychedelic rock musicians like the Grateful Dead, and the Flower Power anti-war movement against the Vietnam War. These photographs were first exhibited in 1968 at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California.

The Black Panthers 1968-1969

Scope and Contents

This collaboration between Baruch and Jones includes portraits of the Black Panther Party's leadership, portraits of other notable civil rights leaders who were allies of the Black Panther Party or who were sympathetic to the Party's platform, documentation of rallies, the Party's Free Breakfast program, and key Black Panther sites in Oakland and Marin City. There are intimate portraits of children, families and individuals who attended the Free Huey rallies out of solidarity, curiosity, or for the food and company of their community. Also included are photographs of the de Young Museum exhibition.
These photographs were first exhibited in 1968 at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Although surrounded by controversy that nearly led to its cancellation, the exhibition drew more than 100,000 people. The project came about in 1968 when Baruch, through her participation in the Peace and Freedom Party's organizing activities, arranged an interview with Kathleen Cleaver, the press secretary of the Black Panther Party and wife of Eldridge Cleaver, the Party's minister of information. Baruch introduced Jones to the Cleavers and they were invited to photograph an upcoming rally. The images from the rally convinced the Cleavers that Baruch and Jones should be given unprecedented access to the inner circle of the Party's leadership. This included in-prison access to Black Panther Party co-founder and Minister of Defense Huey P. Newton when he was on trial for the shooting death of an Oakland Police Department officer John Frey. Baruch and Jones took photographs of the Party and its activities from July through October of 1968 in an effort to create a better understanding of the controversial organization, which FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover once called "the greatest threat to the internal security of the United States."
