Historical Note
Merrill College is a residential college in the University of California, Santa Cruz. It
was founded in 1968 as the fourth college at UCSC, and early faculty and students
established an academic focus on the study of global poverty and cultural identity in the
Global South.

Scope and Contents
This collection comprises records from Merrill College at the University of California,
Santa Cruz. Included are administrative records; budgets; core course syllabi; course
proposals and requests for course approvals; committee agendas and minutes; documentation of
the People's Alternative Dwelling cooperative housing; commencement material; faculty
by-laws; files from former Merrill provost, John Schechter; event flyers, posters and other
ephemera; photographs of Merrill College staff, students and buildings; and newspaper
clippings and scrapbooks that document the history of the college.
Also included are reports and resource catalogs produced by the Third World Teaching
Resource Center (TWTRC), a research project and collection of academic resources related to
the study of the Global South.
The collection also contains digital videos and photographs featuring imagery of Merrill
College from circa 1999-2013, and a small number of digital photographs of the College and
its students and staff in the late 1960s-1970s.

The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, photographs, Merrill student and staff
directories, official college memos and correspondence, committee agendas and reports,
and Field Program, Merrill Community, and Merrill Student newsletters. Also included is
a photo essay scrapbook entitled, "The Inner City," a Crown/Merrill Cooking Club recipe
book, a scrapbook documenting the Merrill Field Program for Experiential Learning, "The
Merrill Person," which is a student initiaed report on the climate and character of
Merrill College, and a scrapbook of photographs from the early years of Merrill
College.
