Biographical / Historical

Robert Conot (1929-2011) was an American journalist, historian, and writer. He was born Robert Ernst Spielmann in Vienna, Austria, to Isidore Spielmann and Ottilie Reiniger. At age nine, he was evacuated to England as part of the Kindertransport evacuation of Jewish children. His father died in Theresienstadt concentration camp and his mother died in Auschwitz. After two years in England, he was sent to live with his mother's cousin in New Orleans, Louisiana. Conot graduated from Stanford University with a degree in journalism in 1952 and began working at a San Gabriel Valley newspaper and Billboard magazine. During the late 1950s, he changed his last name to "Conot" to address concerns about anti-Semitism.
After the 1967 publication of Rivers of Blood, Years of Darkness, an account of the Watts riots based on interviews with eyewitnesses and in-depth research on Los Angeles in the years leading up to the riots, Conot was appointed to President Lyndon B. Johnson's National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders. As part of the Commission, Conot contributed to the historical section of the final report and researched unrest related to race in various cities across the United States. His work on the Commission led him to Detroit, Michigan, which became the topic for his next book, titled American Odyssey (1974). His time in Detroit resulted in an interest in Thomas Alva Edison, who had spent his formative years in the city and surrounding area. Conot was the first researcher granted access to Edison's archives and published A Streak of Luck in 1979. Conot then embarked on a project to write an account of the Nuremberg Trials. His account, Justice at Nuremberg, was published in 1983. After many years contributing to the Los Angeles Times, Conot joined the Los Angeles Times-Washington Post News Service as an editor in 1989. He remained there until his retirement in 2009.

Scope and Contents

The collection covers the professional writing career of Robert E. Conot, spanning from the 1950s through the 1990s. The majority of the collection covers Conot's two novels, four non-fiction works, and his research on riots for the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders during the late 1960s. Topics covered in Conot's books include the Watts Riots, the history of Detroit, Thomas A. Edison, and the Nuremberg Trials. The series on Conot's published works are generally made up of manuscript drafts and research files. For each book, there are multiple versions of the manuscript at different stages of the writing and editing process. Conot's research files include photocopies of primary resources, notes from interviews, annotated texts, newspaper clippings, and Conot's own notes on topics. In addition to his published works, the collection also includes a number of Conot's unpublished short stories, screen plays, and preliminary research for books that never materialized–including material on electrical engineer William J. Hammer.

Series 7. William J. Hammer research 1980s

Biographical / Historical

William Joseph Hammer was born in Cressona, Pennsylvania, on February 26, 1858. After his education as an engineer, he became a laboratory assistant at Thomas Alva Edison's Menlo Park laboratory in 1879. By 1880, he was the first Chief Engineer of the Edison Electric Lamp Company. Hammer traveled throughout Europe and the United States as a representative of Edison and his companies. On a trip to Paris in 1902, Hammer met Pierre and Marie Curie, who introduced him to their work on radioactive substances. A friend of Orville and Wilbur Wright, Hammer was also interested in flight and aviation. He served as a major in the US Army during World War I and later founded the Edison Pioneers, a group of former Edison Laboratory workers and their families. Hammer was an avid collector of many varieties. In addition to collections of light bulbs and other electric inventions from his time with Edison, he collected signed photographs, postcards, scientific books, scientific ephemera, and items related to flight. After Hammer's death in 1934, his collections were acquired by IBM. Hammer married Alice Maude White (1864-1906) in 1894 and had one daughter, Mabel Hammer Assheton (1894-1989).

Scope and Contents

Series 7 contains materials from Conot's research on William J. Hammer, a laboratory assistant to Thomas Edison. Hammer's daughter, Mabel Hammer Assheton, commissioned Conot in 1982 to research and write a biography of her father. The project was abandoned by 1986 with only a draft of the biography completed. The series contains a number of family letters, photographs, and journals given to Conot by Mabel during his research; inventories and photographs of Hammer's extensive scientific collections; documents prepared when Hammer's collections were transferred to IBM in the 1940s; Mabel's own research into her father's life and career; and Conot's correspondence with Mabel, research notes, and drafts of the proposed novel.

Arrangement

The series is arranged into four sub-series. The first contains biographical material on Hammer and files on some of his associates; the second contains family letters, photographs, and journals that were given to Conot by Hammer's daughter; the third covers Hammer's collections; and the fourth contains Conot's research and drafts of the unpublished biography.

Series 9. Journalism 1989-2009

Scope and Contents

Series 9 covers Conot's work in journalism during the 1980s and 1990s. After writing occasional articles and book reviews, Conot joined the Los Angeles Times-Washington Post News Service as an editor in 1989. The bulk of the series is made up of research and notes for a six-part series on 'Legislating for America' that Conot wrote for the Los Angeles Times in the mid-1980s. The articles covered legislation and democracy from the federal level down to Conot's local representatives in Ventura County and Thousand Oaks, California. The series also includes drafts of the report of the Independent Commission on the Los Angeles Police Department (also known as the Christopher Commission) following the beating of Rodney King by LA police officers in 1991, which Conot covered. There is also a collection of interviews that Conot conducted with economists looking at the future of the American economy in the lead-up to the twenty-first century, as well as additional articles and book reviews written or edited by Conot.

Arrangement

The series is arranged into four sub-series. The first contains research for Conot's six-part 'Legislating for America' series for the Los Angeles Times; the second contains materials about the police beating of Rodney King; the third contains interviews with economists on the future of the American economy; and the fourth contains other articles and materials from Conot's work in journalism.

Series 10. Other Writing

Scope and Contents

Series 10 covers Conot's writing outside of his published books and journalism career. Most of the writing in the series is unpublished. The series includes research and early drafts for projects on John Hinckley Jr.; typescripts for a book on patents in collaboration with Dick Gausewitz; screenplays for episodes of the 1958 TV western Yancy Derringer; drafts for a couple of fictional novels; and a number of short stories, screenplays, poetry, and plays.

Arrangement

The series is divided into 12 sub-series. The first four sub-series cover four projects that Conot started researching and writing, but did not see to completion. The other eight sub-series each cover a different type of writing, such as screenplays, plays, novels, short stories, and project proposals.
