Biographical / Historical
Grandmother grew up in Fresno and attended Stanford in the 1900 to 1905 time frame. The
reference to Normal I believe is to teacher's school in San Jose (San Jose State ?).
Grandfather Arthur Lowell Dahlgren attended Stanford during this time. He lived in "The
Camp" as he was then a poor student. Aunt Dorothy Bernice Dahlgren, married name Clanton,
graduated Stanford in the class of 1934. My Father, Arthur Rowell Dahlgren attended Stanford
in 1932 or 1933 for one year. Then he went to medical school at USC in Los Angles. He was 51
at in line of 50 for Stanford medical school. Received a telegram after enrolled at USC as
being accepted, but replied, "With regrets, he was already enrolled at USC". I attended
Stanford 1957 to 1961. Aunt Dorothy's daughter, Barbara Clanton, latter Barbara Gamble,
attended Stanford 1961 to 1965 and her husband, Dr. David Gamble attended 1960 to 1964.

Scope and Contents
"These pictures include early Stanford and the Bay Area. When Grandmother attended
Stanford, her parents moved to Palo Alto, California. I believe that is why she managed to
travel about the region. Indeed, there are family pictures at the various locations. My
father told me that it was a two-day wagon trip from Fresno to Palo Alto for the family with
their only child, my grandmother.
The first eighteen pictures provide a gallery of Stanford in the fall of 1900. The next
fourteen pictures provide pictures of a house, Madrona. Probably Grandmother's residence for
the first year. Pictures Rowell 181 and 182 should then follow (skipped them when scanning)
for they show dormitory Rooms 12 and 11. The next fifty-eight pictures (through Rowell 1(0)
are mostly campus. But we do find The Flood Estate, a couple of Rowell pictures in Fresno,
and the last four refer to "the Normal." Pictures Rowell 101 through 113 are for Alum Rock
and friends. The next picture is of Grandmother's residence at 153 Effie Street, Fresno,
California. Pictures Rowell 114 through 165 are a tour of Northern California: Hollister,
Goat Island, Warships Philadelphia and Iowa, ''The Chutes" in San Francisco, Examiner
Building, Presidio, Mt. Tamalpais, Berkeley, Pacific Grove, Carmel, John Hopkins Lab, and
Fresno. The last seventeen pictures are of campus and the Rowell family. The pictures Rowell
181 and 182 should have been 33 and 34, but were inadvertently skipped when scanning.These
two dormitory room pictures have titles with dates in the photo album of 1900-1901.
Included are pictures of Grandmother from the 1904 Quad. The date recorded in the Quad in
Grandmother's handwriting is May 13, 1903. The 1903 Quad is dated May 1902 in her
handwriting.
Clearly Grandmother got around the local area. That is because, her parents moved to Palo
Alto while she was at school (as told to me by my Father). Great-grandfather Rowell must
have been comfortable financially. There is a building still standing off the courthouse
square in Fresno called the "Rowell" building. Ownership must have been with the other
Rowell's in the family pictures, for my father never mentioned anything about this
building."

Processing Information
"The original pictures are blue in color with some orange discoloration. I believe that the
pictures were originally black and white. They were scanned as color on a UMAX Astra 6400
flat bed scanner. The pictures were imported to an iMac using Photoshop 5.0LE. Some very
minor cropping was performed and then saved as JPG) format. Subsequently, the pictures were
edited with Photoshop 5.0LE to add layers with the title and picture number off the actual
picture itself. The layers were to preserve the picture pixels as scanned. No editing was
performed in Photoshop, since my skills are so poor at editing.
The file size increased significantly by adding layers to the pictures causing the 186
pictures to take two CD ROMs for storage. Titles were added to pictures by Larry Dahlgren
for clarity when Grandmother did not provide a description. Where there was some doubt or I
could figure out things I provided educated guesses. The continuity also provided some of
the titling, since the pictures were in a photo album in order. The time frame of the
pictures is 1900 to 1905. The building of Memorial Church (pictures Rowell 13, 14, & 15)
clearly dates the time frame and the photo of The Examiner Building (Rowell 126) with "Night
Illumination in honor of Pres. McKinley May 1901" also dates the photographs. Pictures
Rowell 124 and 125 of Warships Philadelphia and Iowa also dates the pictures. Rowell 181 and
182 are pictures titled Room 11 & 12 1900-1901 in Grandmother's hand."
