Abstract: This collection documents the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) project, which was managed by Ames Research Center (ARC) and Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC). The collection provides insight into all aspects of the project, including management, design, engineering, operations, safety and mission assurance, staffing, and outreach. Materials in the collection include reports, briefings, justifications, plans, budgets, correspondence, minutes, technical documentation and data, drawings, newsletters, press releases, photographic materials, ephemera, and memorabilia. The bulk of this collection is in digital formats.

Scope and Content

This collection comprises digital records selected from SOFIA project database libraries (Series I) as well as physical materials from Ames and Armstrong (Series II-V). Series I documents work in the areas of program and project management, project science and research, mission operations, some ground systems, science instrument development, safety and mission assurance, systems engineering and integration, as well as aircraft structures, telescope assembly, cavity door system, mission controls and communications system, instrumentation, and mission systems. The SOFIA Lexicon, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), and Document File Numbering Schema files in Subseries 5 provide overviews of the work performed on this project, terminology, acronyms, abbreviations, and definitions of terms used, and outline the types of records produced. Series II provides additional documentation for project, science, and systems engineering management efforts as well as reference documentation from SOFIA's precursor, the Gerard P. Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO). Series III contains extensive documentation developed for SOFIA's public engagement, educational, and outreach efforts, as well as compilations of communications and publicity received. Photographic materials in Series IV capture informal activities and events and provide technical documentation of aircraft structures and engineering work. This series also contains a set of files related to development and use of a project photograph database. Series V contains keepsakes and ephemeral materials, commemorative items, and oversized materials such as a small set of engineering drawings selected for their artistic value.

This collection does not contain a full drawing set for the aircraft or for the telescope, which was designed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

System of Arrangement

This collection is arranged by original order, format, function, and date. Series I is in the original order. There was no order to the remaining series, so an arrangement was imposed.

Processing Information

The digital files were reprocessed to remove redundant content and drafts, as well as non-conforming characters and spaces from filenames. With the exception of XLSX files, obsolete or proprietary document and presentation file formats were reformatted to PDF.

Series I is partially processed. Item-level metadata for files extracted from the project database libraries is in progress.

I Project Archive Database circa 1996-2023

Physical Description: 8,154 digital objects.

Scope and Content Note

This series comprises sets of digital records and associated metadata extracted from document libraries in the SOFIA project database, including project management, airworthiness certification, safety and mission assurance, science systems, instrumentation, and mission operations files. Types of documentation include correspondence, memoranda, presentations, reports, spreadsheets, schedules, reviews, plans, technical documents, design and test reviews, engineering data, and other files. Not included in this series are DLR telescope assembly specifications and associated drawing library or the engineering drawing and associated lists library.

Scope and Content Note

The following outline summarizes the documentation extracted from this project library:

- Science ground systems files relating to the Mirror Coating Facility (MCF), which was in Building N211 at Ames, and to the Telescope Assembly Alignment Simulator (TAAS), which was used for pre-flight science instrument alignment, pixel mapping and bore sighting. MCF files include reports, analyses, tests, procedures and processes for testing, use, installation, and removal. TAAS files include technical reviews and usage, alignment, and maintenance manuals. - Documentation about the complement of science instruments includes technical reviews, commissioning packages, airworthiness packages and letters, handbooks, and manuals for the High-resolution Airborne Wideband Camera (HAWC, HAWC+), High Speed Imaging Photometer for Occultations (HIPO), German Receiver for Astronomy at Terahertz Frequencies (GREAT), Faint Object InfraRed CAmera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST), First-Light Infrared Test Experiment Camera (FLITECAM), FLIPO (FLITECAM and HIPO), First-Light Infrared Test Experiment Camera (FIFI-LS), and Echelon-cross-Echelle Spectrograph (EXES). This subseries contains files related to the design review process. Included are briefings, presentations, plans, concepts of operations, objectives, requirements, flight and other test results, selected drawings, and other technical review documentation.

4 Flight Operations and Aircraft Maintenance, Safety and Mission Assurance, Airworthiness Certification 2008-2023

Scope and Content Note

This series contains a small set of flight test history documentation from the Flight Operations and Aircraft Maintenance Library (2008-2012), System Safety Working Group meeting minutes and agendas, science instrument acceptance data packages, system safety hazard reports from the Safety and Mission Assurance Library (2008-2023), and airworthiness packages for the aircraft and science instruments from the Airworthiness Certification Library (2009). This last includes progress reviews, Airworthiness and Flight Safety Review Board presentations, minutes, briefs, and technical documentation

5 Data Center Files and Reference Documents circa 1996-2013

Physical Description: 706 digital objects.

Scope and Content Note

This series contains a sampling of documentation from the Data Center, Reference Documents, and Help Libraries. The Data Center set includes meeting minutes from the SOFIA Project Office, Earned Value Independent Project Team and other teams, program and project review documentation, correspondence files, various technical, science, and other presentations, technical reports, selected drawings, and files related to the modification of the ground support facility (Building N211 hangar and offices at Ames). Reference documents include SOFIA logo files, a maintenance stand-down presentation, and a few handbooks related to airworthiness and flight safety review guidelines, flight research design preparation, and flight research objectives and requirements. Help files include two organizational charts and data management documentation, such as the lexicon, WBS, and file numbering schema.

This series contains project management files and KAO reference documentation.

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains documentation that provides a broad overview of the management of the project, including the design and development of the aircraft platform, aircraft system, and telescope, the formulation of science objectives and technical requirements, continued justification of the project, and discussion of a proposed ground support facility. There is also wind tunnel test documentation related to testing of the telescope, the door, and aft cavities. Included are status, progress, and technical reports, studies, presentations, plans, correspondence files, minutes, reviews, and analyses.

2 Reference Documentation 1979-1996

Physical Description: 37 files.

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains KAO reference documentation, such as lessons learned, parts or systems that could be transferred to SOFIA, and technical files related to maintenance and modification of the C-141 aircraft.

III Outreach Materials 1988-2023

Physical Description: 73 files.

Scope and Content Note

This series includes public-facing outreach and materials such as newsletters, news clippings, brochures, and overviews, as well as material compiled for historical purposes such as scrapbook-type materials originally kept in binders. Related scrapbooks can be found in the Photographic Materials series.

IV Photographic Materials 1989-2005

Physical Description: 48 files.

Scope and Content Note

This series contains collections of photographs that show project staff, events, and technical activities such as instrumentation, testing, and engineering efforts. Also included is documentation related to a SOFIA photograph database and associated efforts for creating exhibits and other outreach products. These last are digital scans of printouts from the database (thumbnail listings and images, many with markup and notes) along with some correspondence and progress reports. This material was included in the collection for its potential value as reference material for identifying tradespeople and other staff, and for providing a view into the conversion of the Boeing 747 into an airborne science platform, including fabrication, development, testing and installation of the aircraft's structures, components, and interior. The arrangement of this material was heavily disturbed and has not been fully processed into order.

V Ephemera, Memorabilia, and Oversized Materials 1988-2017

Physical Description: 19 files.

Scope and Content Note

This series contains memorabilia such mission patches, decals and posters, as well as ephemeral materials such as a flown flight mascot and safety information cards. Also included are a small set of oversized drawings of telescope assembly designs (some original) and artwork, including a framed Maori symbol entitled "Miro Porowhita" (twist) that was presented to SOFIA by Andrew Turner, Deputy Mayor of Christchurch, New Zealand.
