Abstract: The Fall Conference is an annual event that promotes collaboration, communication, and professional development for university faculty and staff. Established in 1957, the conference features meetings, orientations, educational seminars, and keynote addresses. Over time, it has evolved to include student engagement activities, recognition of long-serving employees, and initiatives to support diversity. This event remains a cornerstone of the university's efforts to foster community and growth among its academic and administrative personnel.

Biographical / Historical

The Fall Conference, first held in 1957, is an annual event designed to promote collaboration, communication, and professional development among faculty and staff. The conference features a range of activities, including general meetings organized by schools, departments, and divisions, as well as campus tours and orientations for both new and returning staff. Educational seminars focusing on the conference's theme are also a central component.

A notable addition in 1959 was the inclusion of a Student Orientation. Instructors from the Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, and Engineering divisions began meeting with their students to assist with programming and class registration—a tradition that has continued ever since.

Highlights of the conference include the annual address by the university president and keynote speeches delivered by various deans. Since 1959, the Cal Poly Woman's Club has hosted annual staff dinners or luncheons. In 1975, the tradition of recognizing long-serving faculty and staff began with the introduction of the first Service Awards. Efforts to promote diversity were marked by the creation of the annual Black Faculty and Staff Association Luncheon in 1979, followed by the annual Latino Faculty and Staff Association Luncheon in 1982.

Throughout this period, leadership was marked by the presidencies of Julian A. McPhee (1938–1966), Robert E. Kramer (1966–1977), Hugh O. LaBounty (1978–1991), Bob H. Suzuki (1991-2003), J. Michael Ortiz (2003–2014), and Soraya M. Coley (2015–present).

Scope and Contents

The collection includes materials documenting the planning, implementation, and evolution of Fall Conference events at Cal Poly Pomona. Items include administrative records, printed programs, flyers, photographic documentation of events and speakers, and audiovisual recordings of conference addresses, service awards, and themed sessions. The collection reflects the university's efforts to build community among faculty, staff, and students through ceremonies, recognitions, and diversity-related gatherings.
